Well Elvis Had Hips

Well I just completed the Great Mass. Getaway, a 150 mile bike ride from Boston to Provincetown Mass. The ride is a great fundraiser benefitting the National MS foundation. I wasn't sure I was going to do the ride this year because I have no cartilage in either hip and am in the cue for hip-resurfacing in the fall. However, bike riding is actually the least painful activity as it is not load bearing and synovial fluid, (human WD-40) is secreted where the cartilage would be when I ride. So after I enthusiastically and successfully recruited a new rider, "Amanda the Fast" for our team, (The Polar Type Bears), I realized that I had to step up to the bike. The good news is the weather was fanatastic, 70 degrees and sunny. It was the kind of ride where you had to stop and pee more often because you weren't totally sweating out the fluids you were so careful to hydrate with. Important cycling note: First at start and/or first at finish means first in Porta Potty while its still clean and you can still retrieve your cell phone when it drop into the abyss...or not...I had a great ride, felt good, and Amanda kicked some serious cycling butt..not that that was the goal..but...we are cyclists....
So as this is my first blog I'm gonna keep it short but let me say that doing the ride this weekend was so important to me physically and mentally and it proves again that when you give of yourself you get more in return.

Hi, Starkview! I found yuor blog surfing for "hip resurfacing and dr. su." I had an initial consult w/ dr. su and blair last week. Now it's in my court to call for a date for surgery. I'm not a biker but I've been a jogger since I joined the Air Force in 1968! The left hip has been painful the last 6 years or so. I can hardly jog anymore. Maybe once a week. Maybe 1 1/2 miles. Tragic. It's gotten so I cannot even use the elliptical 3 days in a row without serious pain. Dr. Su said I'm a very good candidate for resurfacing--good bone, good health, etc. Please tell me I am doing the right thing.
Please tell me that within a week I'll be glad I had it done.
PS -- I live on the West Side of Manhattan, and enoyed your pix here of Chelsea, Battery Park, the Brooklyn Bridge, Coney Island et. al.
